Visit to a care center

Today I visited parishioners at a care center. When I arrived, Mary was in the TV room listening to a volunteer playing his keyboard and singing songs from the thirties and forties. Everyone in the room (except me) knew all the words to the songs. One of the caregivers got up and started dancing with an old lady. Everyone loved it.
Here's the guy who brought his keyboard with the recorded tracks to the old songs.

When the music was finished, we went to visit Mary's husband in the Alzheimer's unit. He held his head in his hands most of the time I visited him, but he answered my questions in a strong resonant voice. He could say most of the words to "Our Father, who art in heaven..."

I made these sketches from memory.

Scrap aircraft carrier

Whenever you drive past Bremerton, you see three enormous aircraft carriers tied up to the docks. They're surplus ships waiting to be given away or scrapped. The size of these things is staggering. Today I stopped and made a sketch after coming back from a visit to a parishioner.

BusStop sketch

Today I took the ferry to Seattle to attend a meeting of the Diocesan Personnel Commission. While waiting for the bus in downtown Seattle, I made a quick sketch of this building across the street.

Sidewalk scene in Port Townsend

Before we left Port Townsend we had a cup of coffee at a sidewalk table and I made this sketch.

Listening to jazz at Upstage

Last night Katy and I spent the night in Port Townsend to celebrate our 25th anniversary. After dinner out, we stopped at a nightclub called Upstage and heard some great jazz from participants in Centrum, an annual jazz workshop at Fort Worden. While we listened, I made this sketch. Because we were in the balcony, I had to figure out how to draw foreshortened figures.

25th Anniversary in Port Townsend

Katy and I spent a day in Port Townsend to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We checked in at our bed and breakfast, then went downtown to get a cup of coffee. I sketched the building across the street on a postcard for Chad while Katy read an article for anthropology. I love the old buildings in Port Townsend. they're lots of fun to sketch.

Sketches from a journey

Guy, Chad, and I traveled to Colorado to visit my mother and the rest of the family. While waiting for the plane to board at SeaTac airport, I made this sketch.

We spent some relaxing time wandering around the Boulder Mall. While we listened to these musicians (The Rhythm Angels - Rebecca Folsom and Celeste Krenz), I made this pencil sketch.

Wedding at Kiana Lodge

Today I had a wedding rehearsal at Kiana Lodge near Poulsbo. This lodge is a wonderful old log building with marvelous views of Agate Passage. It's a stunning setting for a wedding with a charming lawn and a deck for the ceremony. After the rehearsal I stayed a while and made this sketch. As I did, the next wedding rehearsal took place. Apparently the lodge is booked solid for two weddings a day through the entire summer.

Hospital entry

A few days ago I went to the hospital to pray with a parishioner who was in the prep room for knee replacement surgery. While I was waiting in the hospital entry, I made this sketch.

Starbucks people

I sketched this young man in Starbucks because I admired his loose baggy clothes on his lanky frame.
These three were hard at work crunching some numbers.

A Starbucks conversation

This morning I bicycled four miles to Starbucks for my morning coffee. While drinking my coffee and recovering from the exertion, I made this sketch of two guys in conversation.
