Prologue to John

Today I'm working on my sermon on John 1, a very abstract text, hard to put into ordinary language. While I was thinking about it, I made this sketch of the guy across from me in Starbucks.

Starbucks beauty

It's been a busy week, with Christmas Eve services to plan and lead, and I haven't had time for sketching. Finally got a breather today and had a cup of coffee at Starbucks. Made this sketch of the young woman sitting across from me.

La Junta United Methodist Church

On Sunday we attended La Junta United Methodist Church where my mother has been a member for over forty years. The sanctuary has a beautiful old-fashioned feel to it -- a broad chancel underneath a big arch, traditional carved oak woodwork, and two paintings of biblical scenes of Jesus. I made this sketch of Pastor Terilynn as she preached the sermon.

Pastor Terrilynn Russ

While visiting my mother, we attended La Junta United Methodist Church. My mother has attended this church for over forty years, and it's full of memories. The pastor is Rev. Terrilynn Russ; I made this sketch of her as she sat in her chair near the pulpit.

Belleview Ave, La Junta, CO

Last weekend I flew to Colorado to visit my family. My son, Chad, and his girlfriend, Brittany, came with me and we visited my brother and his family and my two sisters and their families, then we drove to La Junta to spend a couple of days with my mother. I love the quiet simplicity of this little town in the Arkansas River valley. I made this sketch of Belleview Avenue, my mother's street.

Starbucks and Kindles

This guy was intently reading his Kindle in Starbucks yesterday. It was a very busy day and I only had a few minutes to get a cup of coffee and a roll. I did this sketch in ink, without a pencil sketch first.

Orchestra sketch

Tomorrow night I'll be singing with the Bremerton Symphony Chorale as we perform The Messiah by Handel. Tonight we had our dress rehearsal, and while we listened to the orchestra play their pieces, I made a sketch of three of our tenors.

Tracyton Library Book Sale

Our last water bill at the church was a whopping $1,500. How am I going to explain that to my parishioners, I wonder? The plumber came to the church today, scratching his head about the leak. He fixed a small leak which just happened to be at the same place where the electric contractor dug under our water line a few weeks ago. So I called the contractor, the county, the water district, and we're trying to resolve this. Ouch. What a headache, and on my day off.

So after dealing with that, I drove home and made this sketch of the Tracyton Community Library Book Sale. It was gray and drizzling, but they had lots of books under the canopy and various plastic sheets. People came by and bought books and I sat in the car across the street and made this sketch. Very soothing after such a morning.
