Jen on bench

Today I went to my second life drawing class. I used a charcoal stick for the first time, and I worked on proportions. I had a really a great three hours.

This was a twenty minute pose. I like the way the watercolor went on. I started with a wash of transparent yellow, added Winsor red for tone, then finished with cobalt blue to bring in shadow.

This was a twenty-minute pose, but it took me a long time to get the proportions right, and I had to do most of the watercolor after she'd started the next pose.

My first life drawing class

Today was my first real life drawing session. It was fantastic! We had a great model, and it was a real luxury to have lots of time to draw the figure. I learned a LOT. It was great being with other artists who are serious about figure drawing.

We started off with one-minutes poses and graduated to three-, five-, and twenty-minute poses. I' still learning how to keep the proportions right. Takes a lot of guessing, trying a line, re-establishing the line. Then there's shading, which I was just guessing at. So much fun!

Victor Joseph for JKPP

I made this portrait of Victor Joseph for Julia Kay's Portrait Party. The reference photo is here.

Sally Santana memorial service

Today I went to the memorial service for Sally Santana. She was an outspoken advocate for the homeless and the hungry. She was only 58 when she died, and a few days later, her son Gabe also died. I made these sketches during the service.

Crista Shores

This morning I attended a pastor's breakfast at Crista Shores, one of our local retirement centers. Afterward I made this watercolor and then visited one of my parishioners who lives there.

JKPP Luis Vigil

I haven't added a portrait to the Julia Kay Portrait Party for ages. But today the weather was rainy and I spent the afternoon working on portraits. This is Luis Vigil. What I like about this watercolor is that I worked directly with the brush; no pencil lines to start with.

Better Living Through Coffee

Katy and I went to Port Townsend for a couple of days just to have a short getaway. I made this sketch in a great little coffee shop called Better Living Through Coffee.
