Greaves Rd House 2

I painted the Greaves Rd house again, adding a couple of trucks and trying to make a better composition. Unfortunately, the center of interest is smack-dab in the center of the painting. Did a sloppy job of the foreground.

I used my new aluminum paintbox. I really like it, but it makes the paint mixing much different than I'm used to. I'll have to use it some more to get accustomed to it.

Mountain View Rd

On Tuesday mornings, I have breakfast at 7am with our men's group, and then I have a little bit of time before I have to be in the office. So it's a good time to do a quick watercolor. Often I drive around our area looking for an interesting subject, and today I found one.

It was an overcast day, quite heavy with clouds. I drove up Mountain View Road and discovered a delightful little valley with a barn. I'm sure in the old days this house and barn were the only buildings in this vsalley, but now most of the open area has been subdivided and houses built. But the old barn remains, so I sat in my car and made this watercolor.

Here's a photo for comparison:

House off Greaves Road

On a gray, foggy morning I stopped off to make this sketch on the way to work.

Drawing Jam 3

I attended the Drawing Jam at Gage Institute in Seattle yesterday, with two friends from my Friday drawing group. There were dozens of models posing in various rooms, hundreds of people sketching and drawing , with lots of open studios to browse through. Truly an eye-opening event, and lots of fun.

This is probably my best drawing of the day. We stayed until about 3 pm and I was exhausted when we left.

One of the models was a large African-American woman in a bikini. She was a great model and delight to draw.

Along the road at Stevenson, Washington

I made this painting while we were in Stevenson, Washington, for Thanksgiving at my sister-in-law's house. I'm quite happy with this painting -- I like the general composition, with the sight lines from the road, the fence, and the trees all leading the eye into the distance; I like the lost edges of the barns; the color harmony is good because I used mostly three colors (Winsor blue, permanent rose, and Winsor yellow); I like the shadows across the road; I like the foreground, midground and background; and I like the contrast between light and dark. Unfortunately the photograph of the painting doesn't capture the colors very well. But you get the idea.
