I drew these portraits while I listened to speeches at diocesan convention. It makes the time go faster.

Abdel November 13

This is my best painting of Abdel yesterday at life drawing.

Sky practice

I continue to work on my skies, trying to find a way to portray the beautiful soft grays, yellows and blues in our Northwest skies. I followed a demo by the English painter Alan Owen and made these watercolors using his suggestions. After I painted the sky, I put in a foreground to finish them off.

Watercolor pencil and wash, 11 x 17 inches

Kitsap Barn 2

This is another attempt to portray cloudy skies. I painted the same barn underneath it with a shed to frame the left side. 10 x 14 in.

Life drawing with Terrance

Today I had a good day of drawing with our model Terrance. Here are some of the better drawings.

I sketched this fellow while having coffee at Starbucks.

JKPP Dan Hoffman

Friday, September 18, 2015

Today we resumed our life drawing group that was in recess for the summer. It was good to get back together, but I felt a bit rusty. A bit of practice should take care of that.

I'm trying to work on cloudy Northwest skies, and I put a barn beneath the skies.

Chehalis River watercolor

I painted this watercolor using this photo by Steve Bisig. This is a scene along the Chehalis River near Montesano, Washington.

Copies of Milind Mulick watercolor demo

After watching this youtube demo by Milind Mulick, I painted several copies to learn how he does it. I think I got better each time.

Deschutes River

While our family was on vacation near Sunriver, OR, I made this watercolor of the Deschutes River. I leave the rental house early, while they're still sleeping, so I can get in some painting.

Boat on a trailer

This boat on a trailer near Quilcene, WA, caught my eye and I made a pencil sketch.

Then I made a watercolor of it.

Bus rider

I made this sketch while riding the bus in Seattle. It's hard to keep a steady line in a lurching bus.

Another painting of Egg and I farm

This is another painting of the farm on Egg and I Road that I painted last Friday.

F/V Brookfield

This is the Fishing Vessel Northfield, hauled out at Port Townsend Shipyard, getting a new coat of paint. As I made this sketch, the boat painters joshed each other and cracked jokes. I haven't heard the F-word used that much in a long time! 11 x 8.5 inches

Egg and I Rd

This abandoned farm is on a road call "Egg and I Road." How it got that name I have no idea. As I was sketching, a farmer stopped by. He owns the property, as well as a good spread along the valley where he has a dairy farm. He lamented that the barn needed a new roof about twenty years ago and now it's about ready to fall in. 5.5 x 8.5 inches

Beaver Valley house and shed

This is a little house and shed along the Beaver Valley Highway. The house is abandoned, but just behind it is a double-wide that's occupied. The shadows are actually gray. I don't know why they look blue in this photo. 5.5 x 8.5 inches

Gustafson Road driveway

After breakfast with the Sonshine Fellowship crowd, I meandered along Gustafson looking for a painting. I found one in this farm lane and spent a half hour sketching it. Later I added watercolor.

Here's a photo of the scene:

OC graduation sketches

On Sunday, I attended the graduation ceremonies of Olympic College to watch one of our young parishioners graduate. While I was there, I made these sketches.
