F/V Brookfield

This is the Fishing Vessel Northfield, hauled out at Port Townsend Shipyard, getting a new coat of paint. As I made this sketch, the boat painters joshed each other and cracked jokes. I haven't heard the F-word used that much in a long time! 11 x 8.5 inches

Egg and I Rd

This abandoned farm is on a road call "Egg and I Road." How it got that name I have no idea. As I was sketching, a farmer stopped by. He owns the property, as well as a good spread along the valley where he has a dairy farm. He lamented that the barn needed a new roof about twenty years ago and now it's about ready to fall in. 5.5 x 8.5 inches

Beaver Valley house and shed

This is a little house and shed along the Beaver Valley Highway. The house is abandoned, but just behind it is a double-wide that's occupied. The shadows are actually gray. I don't know why they look blue in this photo. 5.5 x 8.5 inches

Gustafson Road driveway

After breakfast with the Sonshine Fellowship crowd, I meandered along Gustafson looking for a painting. I found one in this farm lane and spent a half hour sketching it. Later I added watercolor.

Here's a photo of the scene:

OC graduation sketches

On Sunday, I attended the graduation ceremonies of Olympic College to watch one of our young parishioners graduate. While I was there, I made these sketches.

Pioneer Square

Vacation sketches
When I arrived in Seattle, I missed my ferry to Bremerton, so I went to Pioneer Square and made this watercolor in my sketchbook. 8.5 x 11 inches

Couple napping on the ferry

On my vacation, I traveled to Colorado to visit my family. I made this sketch of a young couple asleep on the ferry to Seattle.

Eastern Colorado farm

Vacation sketches
I enjoy driving across the short-grass prairie of eastern Colorado. I stopped and made this sketch of a farm on Highway 71, south of Limon. The farms and ranches in this area are mostly old buildings, weather-worn and well-used. It's not easy to make a living out here, and I admire the people who stick it out.

Bittersweet Cafe

Vacation sketches
I had a cup of coffee at Bittersweet Cafe in Louisville, CO, and made this sketch.

Belleview Ave watercolor

Vacation sketches
I sat across the street from this grand old house on Belleview Ave and made this watercolor. The mosquitoes were after me but I managed to concentrate on the painting instead. 8 x 10 inches

Belleview Ave sketch

Vacation sketches
I like this old house. it's just down the street from my mother's house. I made this preliminary sketch in my sketchbook (5.5 x 8.5 in).

La Junta United Methodist Church

I'm visiting my mother in La Junta, Colorado. Mom is 95 , but she's going strong...lives in her own house and attends the Methodist Church most Sundays, a couple of blocks from her house. I'm very fortunate that my sister, Betty, helps Mom every day to keep her quality of life high. Made this sketch of Mom's church, which is an important part of her life.

Masons working on a cement block wall

A new shopping center is being built on Greaves Road, not far from work. When I go by, I often stop to check on their progress. When the masons were building a wall near the road, I took some photos to use as reference for watercolors. Here's the reference photo:

And here are the watercolors. You can see that I switched the positions of the two workers so they're facing each other. The first one is 7 x 10 inches:
The rest of them are 12 x 16 inches, quite a bit larger.
Next attempt. I tried to paint loosely for this one, and I like the way the shapes merge.
And another one:

Life drawing June 12

I only got two drawings that I was really happy with, both 5-minute charcoal drawings.

Gloria at life drawing

From life drawing today. Next Friday will be our last session until fall. I really enjoy our group and I'll miss our weekly drawing sessions. I've learned a lot from my fellow artists.
