Christ of the Desert Monastery

From July 5-11, I was was on retreat at Christ of the Desert Monastery near Abiquiu, New Mexico. It is an astoundingly beautiful place, located up a canyon ringed with sandstone cliffs, accessed by a long winding gravel road. During my time there, I made a number of watercolors of the canyon, the guest house, and the chapel. Here are the successful ones.

You can see the chapel with the head of the canyon in the background. In order to make this painting, I scrambled up the slopes above the monastery and perched under a pine tree. As the morning wore on, the sun got hotter and the watercolors dried very quickly. Had to finish the foreground in a hurry. 11 x 15 inches, watercolor.
