Paintings from Herman Pekel workshop in Bend, Oregon

The week of August 5-9, I attended a watercolor workshop by Herman Pekel, the famous Australian painter. Herman is quite a character, very charming, a little eccentric, but a very good teacher and fabulous impressionist watercolor painter.

Each day of the workshop he would demonstrate a painting, telling us how he was doing it. He’d take a break partway through and allow us to reproduce what he did, then he’d return to his painting and we’d watch again. I learned a huge amount from him. There’s nothing like standing at the elbow of a master and seeing how he plans a painting, lays in his washes, and finishes with dry brush technique.

Here are the paintings that I made with Herman. Keep in mind these are merely copies of Herman’s work, and they aren’t really my original work.
